The much anticipated movie of the year is finally available for online viewing, and for those who could not attend the cinema premieres, the fact that the movie is finally available is good news. However, it is a bit tainted; Gevevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart Movie is on Neflix, and now it’s everywhere.
After what seemed like a lifetime, veteran Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji released Lionheart, a movie that had indeed toured various continents, to the Nigerian audience.
Lionheart is in fact Genevieve’s directional debut, and everyone, including me, waited with bated breath to see the movie. Interestingly, the movie was announced as a Netflix Original, much to the surprise and awe of Nigerians on the internet, and it was a proud moment for everyone.
Now, I became quite concerned about the new development with Netflix when I happened upon a torrent site, and lo and behold, Lionheart was right there! This was even days before the official date for the Netflix release. How was it possible that a movie that had yet to be released on Netflix was available for viewing on a torrent site?
More needs to be done by Nigerian filmmakers, and indeed filmmakers in general to protect their content online. Now I am wondering what deal Genevieve and her team must have cut with Netflix, because whatever it was, it must have been really good. I cannot imagine what a leak like this could mean for the average filmmaker in Nigeria who may have funded their work out of pocket.
Lionheart is a great watch, and if you are indeed a fan of Nollywood and the growth of indigenous Nigerian filmmakers, you will shun streaming sites and head on to Netflix to see the movie.
